A Welsh View of World War 1 – David Jones’s “In Parenthesis”
November 6, 2015 @ 5:00 pm - November 8, 2015 @ 2:00 pmdonation
Those of you who have experienced Roger Ellis’ ability as a lively, engaging facilitator will be delighted to hear that he is returning to Llansôr this autumn, to offer a heart-touching workshop exploring together ‘what really matters’. We’ll use the epic First World War storytelling In Parenthesis, by Welsh David Jones as our frame, the event timed to coincide with the Armistice Day remembrances. This is arguably the greatest English ‘memoir’ of the first years of the War.
In Parenthesis, based on Jones’s own experience as an infantryman, narrates the experiences of Private John Ball, a soldier in a joint English-Welsh regiment. It starts with embarkation from England and ends seven months later with the assault on Mametz Wood during the Battle of the Somme. David Jones’ work, brought to life by Roger, offers an evocative, accessible mixture of lyrical verse and prose, ranging in tone from formal to Cockney colloquial and military slang.
The weekend opens with a powerful, imaginative solo performance of writing and visual imagery produced in and after the First World War. The workshop that follows will explore participants’ experiences of the work, building gently and powerfully to a ‘just for us’ shared performance. As with all events here, there will be times of silence, reflection and open, honest sharing during our time together.
